Chi's Sweet Song

The Japanese, no doubt, know their cats. Right now, I got myself hooked on Chi's Sweet Home*, a series of anime shorts, about Chi, a kitten who got separated from her family and eventually is adopted by a young human family.

Props to my friend Hethler for sending me the first five episodes! I fell in love with it instantly, even without English subtitles. It's funny and touching and gives great insight on the workings of the little feline's mind. And its clueless humans.

The episodes remind me, of course, of my days raising little Figaro. Chi's forays with the litterbox, her first bath and encounter with the blowdrier, her nightmares, the longing for "home" and her bonding with the child Youhei (with whom she shares toilet-training milestones) - all hit home. The "we-can't-keep-a-cat" conflict in the series, is all too familiar, it being the very plot of the cat-centric short story I wrote in a creative writing class in college (finding the hard copy of which has been in my mental to-do list for years now).

I'm only on the 13th episode and very much intend to follow Chi's journey home in all 104 (hopefully with subtitles). Must see for all kids at heart and cat lovers.

Meanwhile, here's the equally adorable themesong, Ouchi Ga Ichiban (English trans. Home is the Best) by Satomi Koorogi.

"I'm happy
Full of milk pleases me
Being rubbed after playing makes me happy
It's time to eat
And I'm full with yummy stuff
And lie down feeling happy
Flop... Sleepy..."

Being a neko lover, I really enjoyed this series. It's one of the first short anime I ever watched. ^.^

Despite the eps only being about 3 min in length, the emotions really got to me. A must watch for any cat fan. =^..^=
