Late last year my suking hairstylist transferred to another salon. His old affiliation already wasn’t the cheap kind but since it’s always been a satisfying experience, I didn’t mind shelling a few more hundred bucks than I would like to. His new salon, however, charged over 40% higher, ulk! Beauty knows no pain, so goes the saying, but the pangs need not always come from the pocket!
So I guess it’s time to find an new place - I like to alternate stylists, anyway. In my personal experience, no matter how good the stylist is – a downward trend in creativity and adventurousness in what they do to my hair is inevitable after a while. It’s healthy to have one person change the other person’s work from time to time.
Today, I decided to check out the stylist my yoga classmate recommended, not far from where we go to class. The interiors weren’t bad, there was the perfunctory shampoo and massage. They seemed to use the same products as the higher end salons (though I was only there for a trim). All in all, it was really no different from what I was used to from my old suki.
- Dozens of reading material at the waiting area… check. The magazines are actually not in the lounge. I had to ask to find out where they were. Interestingly, what were in the lounge were inspirational and self-help books, but mostly on marriage and parenting (hence, the asking for the magazines). Later, though, I spotted a copy of Robert Greene’s The Art of Seduction on the shelf.
- Choice of cold drink… check.
- Polite and non-talkative staff… check.
- No diva attitude… check.
- Looking at every millimeter of hair (which was what a blog said about my old stylist that made me go over and try him out)… check.
- Giving me the haircut I wanted (in this case, I brought a picture but were some minor modifications involved) … check.
- Knowing my hair-type’s limitations in terms of how similar it would look to the picture… check.
- Perfect wash-and-wear haircut that potentially would still look good as it grows out… check.
- Hairdryer that’s not too hot... check.
- No blatant cross-selling of other services… check.
All of the above for a fee of P185! So it’s just as the Surf detergent's Lumen campaign of old… says, “singganda ngunit di singmahal”! And for this, I’d like to do them a bit of service through this free PR.
Metro Salon is located at the corner of V. Luna St. and Kalayaan Avenue in Quezon City. The stylist’s name is Jerzon.
