Life Lessons From Sesame Street

My Sesame Street Old School DVD volumes have finally arrived and I've been watching them ardently with my 2 year-old niece. (Let me emphasize, though, that I got the DVDs for myself.) I might write separately about my thoughts on the DVDs, but offhand, I feel so lucky to be part of the generation that grew up with this revolutionary show.

It's nostalgia galore alright, but now that I'm done learning my ABCs, I'm seeing the show with adult eyes - and having new appreciation for its genius. Watching the muppet sketches is like having Saturday Night Live on kids mode. And the music! Not only did it reflect the era with the folksy tunes of the late 60s and 70s rock and roll and funk, it showcased the whole spectrum - country, classical, Hindu-inspired, and what-have-you melded with your good old theatrical numbers.

Beyond the wit and the music - I never thought this boxed set has yet another lesson in store for my adult self. Take this film that was included in the Season 6 (1974) premiere. "Go ahead and touch, go ahead and feel". Let the wonderment of discovering something new envelope us. Be it about opening up to other people or adventures, we all need to be told this once in a while no matter how old we are.

See video below.

Go ahead and touch
Go ahead and feel
Reach out and see
If what you see is real
Go ahead and push
Hop right on and ride
Try to reach or wonder
Of what's there inside

Don't be scared
Don't be shy
If something beautiful
Catches your eye

Go ahead and touch
Go ahead and feel
Don't think too much
About the way you feel

You might never have a chance again
And you'll have to remember when
You were afraid to feel
Something warm, and rich, and real.
